Space Travel Guide

Space is the highway between living worlds

Stars Reach sells a single shared galaxy, not a lobby of disconnected maps. After Haven teaching and Crucible pressure, you graduate into space: the TPL Starbase hub, planetary portals, wormholes to wild worlds, and the logistics habit of returning with more than screenshots. Steam Early Access opens August 18, 2026 (AppID 1925650). This guide explains how to think about travel so every hop feeds crafting, botany, or a settlement claim instead of aimless tourism.

Read Getting Started first if you have not finished onboarding. Pair this page with planets and exploration for surveying methods and How to Play for the explore → gather → craft → build loop.

The onboarding spine into space

Public playtest messaging has framed a reliable spine:

  1. Short tutorial spaces that teach movement and interaction.
  2. Haven — safer teaching moon/town with guided objectives.
  3. Crucible — harsher training planet for resources and risk.
  4. TPL Starbase — social hub, mission terminals, and gateways outward.
  5. Persistent planets plus occasional wild wormhole worlds that rotate or retire.

Brave New Worlds-era posts retired older wormgates and introduced new persistent worlds with updated rarity systems. Expect Early Access to keep rotating which planets are “home” versus “expedition.” Treat names as living labels: confirm the current portal board on the Starbase rather than memorizing a fan list forever.

TPL Starbase: your orbital home base

The Starbase is where player density concentrates. Use it to:

  • Reorient after a confusing planet death or logout.
  • Hit mission terminals and social meetups.
  • Buy or redeem access-facing items when shops live there.
  • Spend skill points nearby if a portal/homestead is not available—remember K still needs a valid spend location (skill trees).
  • Stage inventories before a wormhole run so you do not strand rare seeds in a full backpack.

Calm Before the Storm also improved maps, key redemption in Options, and HUD clarity—useful when the Starbase is crowded during launch week. See Calm Before the Storm and Server Slam for why Haven-to-space flow was load-tested before August 18.

Wormholes, spaceports, and wild worlds

Steam and studio copy describe traveling through wormholes to discover new worlds. In practice, think in three travel classes:

  • Persistent planets — longer-lived places where settlements and economies can form.
  • Wild wormhole worlds — shorter-lived or rotating extract/explore zones; strip carefully and leave with seeds, assays, and notes.
  • Hub space — Starbase and portals that glue the fantasy together.

Travel etiquette that keeps the galaxy healthy:

  • Do not open a wormhole run without a craft or survey shopping list.
  • Bring tools that match the XP you want: Terraformer, Harvester, Pathfinder, light combat.
  • Screenshot portal colors or board labels before you leave so you can return.
  • Assume wild worlds may vanish; bank unique flora via botany before the gate closes.

Logistics: camps, clones, and time boxes

Stars Reach markets short useful sessions and clone-style join-near-friends fantasies. Space travel fails when your camp, claim, and inventory staging are random. Before a hop:

  1. Empty junk so return cargo has room.
  2. Know which resources and rarity gaps you are filling.
  3. Place or bookmark a camp on the destination if you will dig for more than one session.
  4. Keep a combat loadout for wildlife near landing zones (Combat Basics).
  5. Set a time box—survey for thirty minutes, then decide whether the planet deserves a homestead.

Group travel systems have been a recurring patch theme. If friends cannot follow your portal, stop and solve the party route before you vanish into a wild world alone with the only Chronophaser.

What to bring on your first real space session

  • Upgraded starter tools (even mid-PQRV beats tutorial scrap).
  • Harvester plus at least basic mining kit.
  • Repair/consumable buffer for Crucible-level hostility.
  • Empty slots for seeds, assays, and loot-tier crafting components introduced in Calm Before the Storm.
  • A plan for where you will spend XP when you return.

Skip the urge to “see every planet” on day one. Early Access success is a repeatable route: Starbase → known extract world → craft at camp → sell surplus → next wormhole with a new shopping list.

Space travel and the economy

Interplanetary logistics create trade. Specialty organics, rarity metals, and interim craft parts become valuable when only some crews routinely run wild worlds. Vendor kiosks on player settlements turn successful hops into shops—see economy and trading. Pack tiers (Firstlight, Voyager, Cosmonaut) change how you enter Early Access, not whether you still need travel discipline; compare them on pack comparison.

Leave Haven when the tutorials stop teaching. Stay in space only as long as the next craft still has a missing ingredient—and always know which portal brings you home.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

When do I unlock space travel in Stars Reach?

After finishing the Haven and Crucible-style onboarding spine, you reach the TPL Starbase and portals that lead to wider planets and wormhole worlds.

What is the TPL Starbase?

It is the main orbital social hub with mission terminals, player density, and gateways used to reach persistent planets and wild wormhole destinations.

Are wormhole worlds permanent?

Wild wormhole worlds are often shorter-lived or rotating. Bank unique resources and seeds before a gate retires; confirm live boards each session.

What should I carry before a planet hop?

Bring upgraded tools, empty cargo space, a light combat kit, and a shopping list tied to crafting or surveying goals.

Where do I learn surveying after I can travel?

Use the planets and exploration systems page for Pathfinder habits, then feed discoveries into crafting and settlement plans.
