Mining is world-making

In Stars Reach by Playable Worlds, digging is never only inventory filler. The Terraformer family lets you extract minerals, scan at range, deposit matter, and reshape terrain. That means every mine is also an edit to a living planet—especially once you leave Haven’s teaching spaces for Crucible and beyond. The Terraformer tool family

Playtests split an overloaded multi-tool into clearer jobs:

  • Terraformer — primary extraction and active resource scanning
  • Depositor — places chosen resources from inventory back into the world
  • Chronophaser — heat beam plus erode / lithify style operations for reshaping matter

Scanning before you dig

Long-range mineral and gem prospecting exists so you stop treating every hillside like a lottery. Scan, mark a target mentally, then commit a tunnel plan. Blind digging wastes durability, battery, and structural integrity.

Hoppers, tailings, and inventory discipline

When you extract, material flows into a hopper. Fill behavior is tutorialized the first time for a reason—overflow thinking differs from classic MMO bags. Tailings eject as waste byproducts rather than pretending every pixel is treasure. Plan drop points, depositor cleanups, and trips back to camp so you are not stranded heavy and slow.

Practical habits:

  1. Select the intended resource with TAB before the beam starts singing.
  2. Watch hopper meters; leave margin for a grappler escape.
  3. Separate “keep for crafting” piles from “reshape later” piles.
  4. Craft interim components soon so raw stock does not rot your motivation.

Cave-ins and structural respect

Sandbox voxels forgive creativity until they do not. Undercutting wide chambers, deleting pillars, or heat-blasting support rock invites collapse. Dig with future-you in mind: leave ribs, avoid hairline exits, and keep an upward escape that a grappler can finish.

Chronophaser: heat, erode, lithify

The Chronophaser is how mining becomes terraforming art. Heat beams and erode/lithify operations let you harden, soften, or reshape volumes that pure extraction would only delete. Use it to open safe galleries, sculpt roads toward a camp, or clean a cliff face for building tiles.

Civil Engineering versus smash tunnels

Not every hole is a mine. Civil Engineering style play treats tunnels as infrastructure: graded paths, support-minded corridors, access to fabricators, and logistics for groups. Smash tunnels maximize short-term ore and externalize collapse risk to whoever walks through next.

Early Access communities will develop etiquette around shared planets. If you dig public routes near hubs or popular Crucible sites, engineer them. If you claim a private shaft toward a rare vein, still leave yourself a maintainable bore instead of a death maze.

Linking mining to economy and skills

Raw ore is only half a product. Refining and metallurgy turn scans into tradable goods and better tools. When your hopper habits stabilize, push materials through crafting chains and consider vendor outlets described in economy & trading.

Skill investment should match your week: deepen mining nodes while you chase a tool breakpoint, then atrophy lower priorities using respec in practice when you pivot to crafting or settlement work. Profession framing lives under professions and the skills hub.

  1. From a camp or Starbase, confirm tool durability and empty hopper space.
  2. Travel with grappler confidence and a return route.
  3. Scan first; dig second.

  6. Bank at camp; craft the next upgrade the same evening if you can.
