Stars Reach Controls and Keybinds

Why controls matter in a sandbox MMO

Stars Reach (Playable Worlds) asks you to dig, grapple, scan, craft, and swap abilities in the same session. Bad keybinds turn a fun Crucible outing into menu wrestling. This page lists the binds new players should memorize before Early Access on August 18, 2026, then explains how they connect to systems described in How to Play and Getting Started.

Defaults can shift with patches—confirm in-game after updates and skim patch notes when a tool’s mode keys change.

Open the skill forest with K

K opens your skills UI. Stars Reach uses a classless skill forest grouped into profession-shaped trees. You can inspect nodes in the field, but spending points is tied to trusted contexts: a homestead, a camp, or a portal. That design stops accidental respecs mid-fight and nudges you to return to civilization when you level.

When you are ready to specialize, read skills, professions, and skill trees. When you hit the in-practice cap, respec in practice explains atrophy instead of permanent deletion.

ESC for menus and rebinding

ESC opens the game menu where settings and keybind rebinding live. Rebind early if you come from another MMO. Priority candidates:

  • Interact / use
  • Grappler
  • Resource selection
  • Ability slots
  • Push-to-talk or chat if you play with a crew

Keep camera invert, sensitivity, and reticle style comfortable before you attempt precision terraforming. A mis-aimed beam is how tunnels become sinkholes.

R for the grappler

R is the default grappler bind many playtesters learn first. Grappling is mobility and rescue: crossing pits you dug, escaping collapse angles, or chaining movement across vertical claims. The reticle can signal valid grapple targets—watch for those cues instead of spamming blindly.

Practice grappler timing on Haven before you attempt aggressive Crucible cliff lines. Mobility failures waste more Early Access evenings than missing a rare node.

TAB for resources and tool modes

TAB opens resource selection for tools that need a target material—especially Terraformer scanning/extraction modes and deposit/planting flows on related tools. Left-click the resource you want. This replaced older “mystery mode swap” habits and is essential for clean mining.

If you forget TAB, you will extract the wrong material, fill hoppers with junk, and wonder why crafting inputs look terrible. Pair this section with Mining & Terraforming and resources and rarity.

E and Q ability loadouts

E and Q fire the two active abilities (specials) attached to your current tool or weapon. You do not unlock infinite simultaneous specials; you choose a loadout. Configure abilities at a Loadout Kiosk (camps of various tiers and locations such as the TPL Starbase) or via inventory context when the game allows safe-area right-click loadout edits.

Reticle UI often shows cooldown dots for the two ability slots. Learn to glance there during combat and during tool specials alike. Deep dive: ability loadouts and practical fight advice in Combat Basics.

Terraformer beam and tool family habits

The Terraformer is not only “left click rock.” It extracts minerals, participates in scanning, and works alongside sibling tools that historically split out of an overloaded multi-tool design:

  • Terraformer — extract and scan
  • Depositor — place resources back into the world
  • Chronophaser — heat beam, erode / lithify style terrain edits

Your reticle may show battery, hopper, or charge meters depending on tool. Learn which meter means “stop digging” before a cave-in or a dead battery ruins the run. Civil Engineering-minded tunnels differ from smash-and-grab mines—see the mining guide for structural thinking.

Inventory, interaction, and safe areas

Expect a dedicated interact key (commonly taught as G in some updates) for world objects, kiosks, and doors. Inventory management matters because tools break, hoppers fill, and crafted interim parts stack up. Safe areas—camps and homesteads—unlock conveniences like certain loadout edits and banking behaviors.

Vendor kiosks and fabricators are interaction targets too; settlement controls overlap with building play in Building Settlements.

  1. Confirm K, TAB, R, E, Q, interact, and jump/crouch.
  2. Open ESC → rebind anything that fights your muscle memory.
  3. At a camp or Starbase, open a Loadout Kiosk once so you know the UI.
  4. On Haven, practice TAB resource picks with a starter Terraformer.
  5. After your first XP spike, return to a camp/portal/homestead to spend with K.

Accessibility and session comfort

Sandbox sessions run long. Lower camera shake if available, increase UI scale if text is small, and consider remapping grappler away from keys you misclick while chatting. Stars Reach is online multiplayer—leave room on the keyboard for communication binds you will actually use with a crew.

Master a short bind vocabulary first: K to plan identity, TAB to choose matter, R to move through the holes you make, E/Q to express the specials you earned. Everything else is refinement.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What does the K key do?

K opens the skills interface. You inspect trees anywhere, but spending points is done at a homestead, camp, or portal.

How do I select Terraformer resources?

Press TAB to open the resource selection menu for scanning or extraction, then left-click the resource you want.

How do ability loadouts work?

E and Q activate the two abilities on your current tool. Change them at Loadout Kiosks (and via safe-area inventory options when available).

Can I rebind keys?

Yes. Use ESC to reach settings and rebind controls early so mining, grappling, and abilities match your muscle memory.

What is the grappler key?

R is the common default for the grappler. Watch reticle feedback for valid grapple targets before you commit.
